Scientists now have many ways to predict avalanches. First, they can dig a pit of snow in a certain part of the mountain. This way they can look at the area and it will help them know more about that area and what is wrong about that part. This won't help stop an avalanche, but it will give a better understanding of what causes them. An other thing that is used are instruments that can measure the snow. They use past data from previous avalanches, as accurate weather predictions as they can find, and they monitor the snowfall very carefully in order to be able to predict if people are in danger. Even explosives are used to help reduce the danger of an avalanche. When there isn't a lot of snow, or people won't be harmed as much, avalanches are created on purpose so that the avalanche won't happen at a worse time. Fences can also be put up to stop the snow from reaching buildings. Versions of dams can also be put at the bottom of a mountain. This is the most complex way to stop avalanches, but it is very effective. Overall, there are several ways to predict and stop avalanches from causing harm, but they are still a very big threat.
